Character name: Vergil
Age: 19-20?
Canon: Devil May Cry
Canonpoint: Post-Devil May Cry 3's secret ending, while Vergil's charging at Mundus

Background: All the Vergil info you need to know.

Personality: Those familiar with Devil May Cry at all are likely familiar with Dante's personality. Bombastic, nonchalant, playful, clad in red...all of this with an undeniable sense of flair and style. Beneath the veil of an unconventional hero is a heart of gold willing to put others before himself.

But that's Dante. This here is Vergil, Dante's elder brother.

Vergil is calm, serious, cold, clad in blue...opposite to Dante in nearly every way. One of the most notable differences is Vergil's code of honor and morals, which rivals Dante's more chaotic and flippant nature. He's the kind of man who boldly faces his challenges head on and outright opposes underhanded tactics and cheap tricks, such as attacking from behind. In a similar vein, Vergil despises firearms and doesn't consider them to be the weapon of a "true warrior." His code of conduct is akin to bushido, a samurai's code of conduct, a commonality emphasized by his weapon of choice: a katana.

But unlike the samurai, Vergil is not exactly one who exudes righteousness and benevolence. He is very self-driven and only shows interests in his own goals with little to no regard towards others. Typically, if they're not out of his way, they're in it. He doesn't like others wasting his time and won't hesitate to threaten them or push them away if he feels the need. When Arkham approaches Vergil in the library, Vergil is quick to dismiss the man's attempts at conversation and only speaks up again after pointing his blade at the man, warning that he won't "tell him [to leave me] a third time." It's only after Arkham provides Vergil info he wants to hear that he sheathes his blade and hears him out, showing that he may not show much, if any, interest in others unless his own business is somehow involved. In that case, it was about achieving the power of his father, a powerful demon named Sparda.

Vergil is half-demon and half-human. Unlike Dante, who fully embraced his human side and abhorred his demonic side, Vergil embraces his demonic side while shunning his human side. His cold, distant nature towards others stems from his refusal to give into his emotions, viewing them as a weakness rather than any sort of strength. Like Dante, this extreme stance on who he is was born from the very same incident from their childhood. Around the time they were eight years old, the Sparda household was attacked by demons. Because their father had already vanished by this point in their lives, only their mother could protect them. She did exactly that, fighting off every single demon that came and protecting her sons. It came at the tragic cost of her life and scarred the twin brothers, who went their separate ways after that.

The elder twin blamed his mother's death on human weakness and since then, denied his human nature (including emotions) as mentioned earlier. This includes letting anyone get emotionally close to him, as it will run the risk of him being hurt again. Vergil also blames himself for being unable to protect his mother and part of his quest for power is to make up for the strength he lacked that day. This makes his quest for power not one to simply have power, but so he can protect those he cares for and prevent another incident like the one in his childhood. This is emphasized in the dialogue during a battle between himself and Dante, where Vergil questions why Dante refuses to accept his demonic power. It's after gaining the upper hand against his brother that he states, "Might controls everything - and without strength, you cannot protect anything; let alone yourself."

Although Vergil himself may not willingly admit it, he has not completely tossed aside his human nature. There is still one person he deeply cares for, even though he never explicitly states his feelings: his love for his brother, Dante. Despite his idiocy, despite taking an opposing stance on their heritage, despite everything, Vergil loves his brother. Dante is his last living family member and one he wishes to protect, even though the two "battled each other fiercely like arch enemies." Their fighting was essentially the most honest they could be with each other in their older years, as neither twin could confide in the other to that extent. To outside perspectives, it can look more like the two "derived some sort of twisted pleasure from this brotherly fighting." It's a trait the twins share. Vergil demonstrates this once again after the final battle, where he informs Dante that the portal between the netherworld and the human world is closing. Here, Vergil leaps into the abyss and prevents his brother from saving him so that Dante will return home and have no reason to stick around.

Because Vergil still cares about his brother (sincerely, at that), he's still capable of caring about others, although they will likely have a difficult time getting that far with him. He still refuses to own up to his feelings and if he must, will show them as indirectly as possible. Even Dante doesn't hear Vergil open up to him that much, so it's very unlikely that any exceptions will be made in that regard. The idea of him developing strong bonds with others is much more possible, though still difficult. His unwelcoming exterior is very intentional, but anyone persistent enough to earn a place in Vergil's favor will find a powerful and loyal ally. Just don't expect him to be too nice to you. Tough love is about as good as it gets with him.

Wish: "I wish for more power..."

Although Vergil blamed human weakness for his mother's death, he still felt responsible for being unable to protect her. That tragic event has since given him a desire to be stronger, largely from his demonic heritage. He sought to do exactly that through Sparda's power while also trying to ignore his more human side, including emotions. This leaves Vergil's desires as paradoxical since he wants the power to protect those he cares for, yet he doesn't let himself care that much for anyone, in fear of being hurt once again.

His wish will reflect exactly that paradox. His love for his mother is what drove him to take this path after her death and though he may never admit it, it's because of that human part of him that drives him to fully embrace his demonic nature. The wish will grant him power so long as he fights to protect those he cares for. In order to become strong, he'll have to befriend others, care about them and, most importantly, risk getting hurt again because of those emotions.

Passive Ability: "Even a Devil May Cry" This provides Vergil with an all-around power boost (attack, defense, speed), so long as he's fighting alongside individuals he cares for. How much he cares for the individual determines how effective the buff is. At most, one person can take him up to 1/3 of his power cap, if his feelings for them are strong enough. Dante and his mother Eva, for example, would take Vergil to 2/3 his power limit due to his strong feelings towards his family members. The buff's power cap is half of his canon levels of strength (Which only includes the aforementioned stat buff. His wish will not grant him canon abilities such as devil trigger or his demonic healing factor; they would count as additional powers). The contract with Kyubey is intended to make him weaker than in canon to prove he always had the power he truly wanted, but neglected it the whole time, so the powers gained from the contract (and their restrictions) will mirror that.

Active Ability: "Might Controls Everything" Though Vergil's wish is inspired by his desire to protect others, he is not the shield bearing type of protector. His style of protection instead involves making sure his teammates can protect themselves. This ability allows Vergil to summon up to three weapons of his choosing at once. The weapons themselves won't have any added abilities beyond ordinary weaponry when Vergil wields them. Their true strength comes when Vergil gives one of these summoned weapons to a teammate; When someone else holds one of these weapons, he will share some of the power gained from his passive ability, but can can't summon any more than three weapons. Otherwise, it will drain his magic too quickly and diminish the effects of the buff. Anyone carrying these weapons must stay within 30 feet of Vergil, otherwise the weapons will vanish. They will also automatically vanish when outside of battle.

Weapon: A katana similar in design to his signature weapon, Yamato.

Sample: His top level
Begrudging assistance
